Visiting Us for the First Time
Know Before You Go
Welcome! We are thrilled to have you join us at the historic War Memorial Opera House. Read over these frequently asked questions to help you prepare for your upcoming performance.
While You're Here
Where should I eat?
We recommend Prelude at the Opera House and Main Bar for elegant dining with buffet or reservation options. Or explore the neighborhood of Hayes Valley, home to iconic classics and trendy hot spots for a pre- or post-performance meal or drink. Visit the Where to Eat page to learn more about dining options in and around the Opera House.
How long is intermission?
Opera intermissions are usually 20–25 minutes. It's enough time for artists and crew to prepare for the next act, and for you to relax and enjoy the Opera House. You'll know it's time to return to your seat when you hear the bells chime. Chimes sound eight, four and two minutes before the performance begins.
Who can I go to for help?
Our friendly usher staff is ready and waiting to help you throughout your visit! You’ll find them stationed on every floor of the Opera House, happy to answer questions, assist with seating, and ensure you have a smooth and enjoyable experience. There is also an information table in the Main Lobby of the Orchestra level.
