David Hockney has worked for over fifty years in a variety of mediums, from photography to painting and drawing to stage design. In addition to The Rake’s Progress (Glyndebourne, 1975) Hockney has designed stage productions of Ubu Roi (Royal Court Theatre, London, 1966), The Magic Flute (Glyndebourne, 1978), Tristan und Isolde (LA Opera, 1987), Turandot (Lyric Opera of Chicago, 1992/93) and Die Frau ohne Schatten (London's Royal Opera, Covent Garden, 1992/93).
His current work painting and documenting the seasons in Normandy, created while in lockdown during the Covid pandemic, was exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts, London and traveled to Brussels, Istanbul and Chicago. David Hockney: Bigger & Closer (Not Smaller & Further Away), an immense immersive projection of the artist's oeuvre in photography, painting, drawing and opera design, opened at Lightroom, King's Cross, London in February 2023.
