Fricka
Goddess of Marriage. Defender of Social Order.
Fricka is the goddess of marriage and in Wagner’s Ring Cycle, she is the relentless voice of accountability to Wotan’s many schemes.
Time and time again, Fricka compels Wotan to face the contradictions at the center of his sovereignty. While he longs for power without consequences, authority without limits, and freedom without responsibility, she refuses to let him escape the laws he himself created.
Fricka in Die Walküre
“Deiner ew'gen Gattin heilige Ehre, wie schützest du sie?”
(The sacred honor of your eternal wife, how do you protect it?)
—Die Walküre, Act II, Scene 1
Although she is frequently treated as the antagonist to romance and rebellion, Fricka carries a remarkable moral force in Wagner’s Ring. She is one of the few figures willing to name what others refuse to acknowledge: that actions have consequences, and broken promises carry a cost.
