Mouzon, Sally

Mezzo-soprano Sally Mouzon is a native of Virginia, but well-known to Bay Area audiences. She made her professional debut at the age of 16 as Cherubino in a Washington, DC production of The Marriage of Figaro. Like any good mezzo-soprano, Sally has played a long list of lovesick boys (Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro, Siébel in Faust), second bananas (Dorabella in Così fan tutte, Adalgisa in Norma), and supportive maids (Annina in La traviata, Alisa in Lucia di Lammermoor, and especially Suzuki in Madama Butterfly).

A member of the acclaimed San Francisco Opera Chorus, Ms. Mouzon has appeared in numerous roles with the company, including Second Priestess in Iphigénie en Tauride, Second Bridesmaid in Le nozze di Figaro, Second Girl in Show Boat, and Second Orphan in Der Rosenkavalier. (Is this typecasting?) She has also created roles in three world premieres; La Popolana in Two Women, Joan in Heart of a Soldier, and Sister Lillianne in Dead Man Walking - each had at least two lines!

She is currently an elected Board member of AGMA (American Guild of Musical Artists) and serves as the San Francisco Area Chair; she has received a life membership for distinguished service to the union.

In real life Ms. Mouzon is an avid reader, linguistics nerd, baseball fan (Go Giants!), and single mother of a collegiate Shakespeare nerd. She is a dedicated alumna of the University of Virginia where she studied African-American History and Russian Language & Literature, and was the recipient of its 2008 Jill T Rinehart Leadership Award. She loves the Bay Area, but she misses warm rain.
